ABOUT

My name is Amaya Stamm, and I am a board certified music therapist or MT-BC at Music Therapy St. Pete, a private practice in St. Petersburg, FL. I created this resource while completing my senior year of music therapy coursework through Florida Gulf Coast University and interning at Music Therapy St. Pete in early 2024. I was inspired to create this resource after learning to work with clients with apraxia in my internship and wanting to bring others resources and tools for working with this population.

Music Therapy St. Pete, is located in the same plaza as the Meraki Collective, which offers support services to individuals with apraxia who are learning to use Spelling to Communicate (S2C) as an AAC, or augmentative and alternative communication. Close proximity to this community provides a valuable connection, and several individuals with apraxia receive music therapy services from Music Therapy St. Pete. Throughout my internship, I became fascinated by working with these individuals and treasure the experience of learning how to best serve their needs and connect with them.

As I met more of these clients and their families and investigated available information, I noticed a lack of research and resources in this area. When one of my supervisors shared resources that defined apraxia, provided me examples of interventions and verbal cues, and shared considerations for working with this population, I felt more equipped to provide services and to connect with clients' bodies as they completed motor tasks. My desire is for other music therapy students, interns, and professionals to share in this experience and in this passion for working with this group of people!

On the following pages, you can expect to find relevant definitions, example interventions, songwriting templates, example check-ins, and a personal reflection on mindset shifts!
